Typically, Butterflies have a very short life cycle and only live between 2 to 4 weeks. Some only live for a few days. While some like the monarch can live up to 9 months.
Their preferred habitat is a humid forest or jungle, where they find many flowers and a suitable temperature for them (between 20 and 30 degrees to survive). Butterflies only eat liquid things, because they cannot chew.
They have a kind of tube called a proboscis that is rolled up and that they unfold like a straw to taste the nectar of the flowers. They usually look for wet flowers to suck the nectar collected in the flower to get the minerals they need.
They lay up to 500 eggs, but very few make it to the final phase of their life cycle. They instinctively choose the best plants to lay their eggs, since they will feed the baby caterpillars at birth. Baby caterpillars are known to eat hundreds of leaves per week so they look for healthy plants with substantial foliage to lay their eggs.
As caterpillars engorge themselves with leaves, they hang upside down and build a chrysalis of silk spun into different shapes colors and patterns, and undergo a metamorphosis, becoming butterflies.
Towards the last phase of the chrysalis stage, the shell becomes translucent and the color of the butterfly waiting to come out can be seen. When the butterfly first comes out of the shell, it has to pump its wings to spread them for the first time, a gentle process that can often be terminated by an angry gang of red ants, should the butterfly fall to the ground before being able to fly, cold weather or rain, since the butterfly is cold blooded and needs the sun for energy.
Once enough blood has been pumped to their wings they begin to dance with flying until they get hungry and instincts send them searching for the closest nectar source. Colors Butterflies come in a wide range of shapes sizes and colors.
The butterflies wings are actually transparent, covered in tiny reflective scales that give the butterflies their amazing colors and patterns. Never touch the butterfly’s wings! If they are damaged the butterfly will never be able to fly again.

They are used in many studies as reference organisms to determine the impacts on an ecosystem. The effects of habitat erosion or known climate change will be shown in their absence. Historically, butterflies have been observed to know about animal migrations, evolution, and confrontation of pests, embryology, genetics, population variations, etc.
Something very strange about butterflies is that they taste with their feet. They stand on leafs to taste the plant in order to verify that their caterpillars can eat it before laying eggs.
Butterflies have the sense of touch in their antennae. However, their senses of sight and hearing are not very developed.
Despite not having an auditory system, they carry extreme sensitivities to vibrations, essentially feeling environmental sounds instead of hearing them.
Moths, are nocturnal butterflies. Diurnal or daytime butterflies evolved from moths. They have been on Earth for 40 million years.
Butterflies are irreplaceable in the trophic chains of a given ecosystem, because they are food for many other species of birds and mammals that feed on insects, and fundamental for processes such as pest control and pollination, roles in nature that are vital for the health of certain plants.
